What You Need — Checklist

Make sure you have all of these before starting

Meta Quest 3 headset (in box)
Smartphone (iPhone or Android)
Wi-Fi internet connection
Free Meta account (we'll create one)
Meta Horizon app (free download)
~1 hour of free time
Age Requirement

Meta requires users to be at least 10 years old to use a Meta Quest headset, and 13+ to have a Meta account. For children under 13, a parent or guardian must create and manage the account. The VR sessions with children should always be supervised by an adult.

1

Create a Meta Account

Free account required — do this on your phone first

If you already have a Meta account, skip to Step 3

A Meta account is the same account used for all Meta products (Facebook, Instagram are separate — you do not need them). The account is completely free.

1
Open your phone's app store

On iPhone: open the App Store. On Android: open Google Play Store. Search for "Meta Horizon" and install the official app (published by Meta Platforms). It is free.

💡 Tip: The app icon is a dark blue circle with a white infinity/horizon symbol.
2
Open the Meta Horizon app and tap "Create new account"

Enter your real name, date of birth, and email address. Choose a strong password. Meta will send a verification email — open it and click the confirmation link.

💡 Tip: Use an email address you can easily access. You will need it if you ever forget your password.
3
Log in to the Meta Horizon app

After verifying your email, return to the Meta Horizon app and log in with your email and password. Keep the app open — you will use it in the next step to pair your headset.

2

Unboxing & First-Time Hardware Setup

Preparing your Meta Quest 3 headset and controllers

1
Charge the headset fully before first use

Connect the USB-C cable (included in the box) to the charging adapter and plug it into the headset. The charging indicator light on the side of the headset will be orange while charging and turn green when fully charged. This may take 2–3 hours.

💡 Tip: Do not skip this step — a fully charged battery ensures the software update during setup does not fail.
2
Remove the protective lens covers

Carefully peel off the thin protective plastic films from the inside lenses of the headset. These are shipping protectors and must be removed before use — if left on, the display will be blurry.

3
Prepare the controllers

Each Touch Plus controller has a battery tab inside the battery compartment — gently pull the paper tab to remove it and activate the battery. Attach the wrist strap to each controller by threading the cord through the loop and tightening it securely.

4
Turn on the headset

Press and hold the power button on the left side of the headset for approximately 3 seconds. You will hear a chime sound and see the Meta logo appear on the screen inside the headset. The headset is now on.

💡 Tip: If nothing happens, the battery may be fully depleted. Connect the charger and wait 10 minutes before trying again.
5
Turn on the controllers

On the left controller: press and hold the Menu button (☰). On the right controller: press and hold the Meta button (the logo button). Hold each for about 2 seconds. You will see a blinking white light and feel a vibration when they are on.

3

Pairing with Your Phone & Initial Setup

Connect the headset to your phone and complete the setup wizard

Enable Bluetooth on your phone

Before starting this step, go to your phone's Settings and make sure Bluetooth is turned ON. The Meta Horizon app needs Bluetooth to communicate with the headset during initial pairing.

1
Put on the headset and choose your language

Place the headset on your head and use the controllers to navigate the on-screen menu. The first screen will ask you to select a language — scroll through the list and select your preferred language using the trigger button on the controller.

2
Connect to Wi-Fi inside the headset

The headset will ask you to choose a Wi-Fi network. Point the controller at your network name, press the trigger to select it, and enter the Wi-Fi password using the on-screen keyboard. Press "Connect" when done.

💡 Tip: Use your home or school Wi-Fi. The headset needs internet to download updates and verify your account.
3
Open the Meta Horizon app on your phone and tap "Set Up Device"

In the Meta Horizon app on your phone, you should see a prompt to set up a new device. Tap "Set Up", then choose "Meta Quest 3". Follow the on-screen prompts — the app will display a pairing code. A matching code will appear inside the headset. Confirm both codes match, then approve the pairing on your phone.

4
Wait for the software update to complete

After pairing, the headset will automatically download and install the latest software update. This can take 5–15 minutes depending on your internet speed. You can remove the headset and wait — it will make a sound when the update is complete.

💡 Tip: Do not turn off the headset or disconnect Wi-Fi during the update. If the update fails, restart the headset and try again.
5
Set up your Guardian boundary (play space)

The headset will ask you to define a safe play area called the "Guardian". Choose "Stationary" if the child will be seated or standing in one spot (recommended for children). The stationary boundary is a simple circle around you. If you choose Room-Scale, you will trace the boundaries of your room using the controller.

💡 Tip: For children with autism, the Stationary mode is generally safer and less confusing. Make sure the area is clear of furniture and obstacles within arm's reach.
Your headset is now set up!

You will now see the Meta Quest home screen inside the headset. The setup is complete. In the next step, you will find and install the VR4Autism application.

Using VR4Autism with Children

Best practices for safe and effective VR sessions

Always supervise children during VR use

Children using the Meta Quest 3 must always be supervised by an adult educator or parent. Never leave a child unsupervised while wearing the headset. Recommended session length for children: 15–20 minutes maximum.

1
Prepare the physical space

Clear a safe area of at least 1–1.5 meters in all directions around where the child will stand or sit. Remove sharp objects, furniture corners, and tripping hazards. Set the Guardian boundary to Stationary mode.

2
Adjust the headset fit for the child

Loosen the side straps, gently place the headset on the child's head, and tighten until it sits comfortably — snug but not tight. The child should see a clear image. If blurry, slide the headset slightly up or down on their face.

💡 Tip: The lens spacing (IPD) can be adjusted physically by gently pushing the lenses together or apart on the Meta Quest 3. Find the setting where the image looks sharpest.
3
Introduce the headset to the child before use

For children with autism, new experiences can be overwhelming. Let the child touch and explore the headset before putting it on. Explain what will happen in simple words. You can show them a short demo by holding the headset in front of their face without putting it on first.

Launch the app

Open App Library, find VR4Autism, and launch it. The app will load directly to the main menu inside the headset.

Choose language

The app supports English, Turkish, Latvian, Lithuanian, and Macedonian. Select the child's preferred language from the in-app settings menu.

Supervise actively

Stay close and verbally guide the child through activities. You can see roughly what they see by watching the controller movements.

Keep sessions short

Start with 5–10 minute sessions and gradually increase. Watch for signs of discomfort: rubbing eyes, complaints, loss of balance, or nausea.

1
Let the child readjust

After removing the headset, give the child a few minutes to readjust to the physical environment. Have them sit or stand still and look around the room before moving.

2
Clean the headset between users

Wipe the facial foam pad with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Clean the outside of the headset with a microfiber cloth. Never use liquid cleaners on the lenses — only use a dry optical microfiber cloth for the lenses.

3
Store safely

Store the headset in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Never leave it near windows where sunlight can hit the lenses — this can permanently damage the displays. Turn off the headset by pressing and holding the power button until you see the "Power Off" option.

FAQ

Stop immediately. Remove the headset and have the child sit down. This is VR motion sickness and is normal for first-time users. Tips to prevent it: Start with 5-minute sessions and increase gradually. Ensure the headset fits well. Use the Stationary Guardian mode. Keep the room well-lit and cool. See Meta's safety guidelines: Health & Safety.
The headset updates automatically when connected to Wi-Fi and plugged into power. To check manually: press the Meta buttonSettings (gear icon) → SystemSoftware Update. Detailed instructions: Meta Software Updates.
Yes. A single educator's Meta account is sufficient for classroom use. Hygiene tips: Wipe the facial foam interface with a dry or slightly damp antibacterial cloth between each student. Consider purchasing disposable hygiene covers. The IPD may need to be readjusted for each child. For managing multiple users, see: Multi-User Accounts.
